If you missed out on the 70th Annual Golden Globes last night, don't worry because you can find it anywhere on the internet…although there is something to be said for watching the hijinks live. With Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's witty turns as hosts, the awards show was given a breath of much-needed fresh air, flinging jokes that are bitingly funny without being alienating. From Fey's shout-out to Quentin Tarantino ("…the star of all my sexual nightmares") to Poehler's deadpan Zero Dark Thirty controversy review ("I haven't paid much attention, but when it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron"), the only drawback to the evening was that there wasn't enough Fey and Poehler. Aside from the perfect hosts (raising the bar impossibly high for the Oscars), here are the winners and losers of the Golden Globes! Ben Affleck was definitely one of the night's winners. He was snubbed for an Oscar nomination for Best Director for Argo, but was vindicated by winning the Best Director category last night at the Globes. Argo also won Best Picture Drama, beating out Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln (former President Bill Clinton appeared to present the film's clips), Life of Pi, and Django Unchained.
Daniel Day-Lewis took home the Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, which should come as a shock to no one. It is worth mentioning that John Hawkes of The Sessions was just as deserving of the award and was at least nominated, unlike his shocking Oscar snub. Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama went to Jessica Chastain for her strong performance in Zero Dark Thirty, beating Naomi Watts for The Impossible.
Les Miserables won the Globe for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, which was a slight in my opinion; Silver Linings Playbook was a much stronger film and its loss could spell trouble for its chances at the upcoming Oscars. Best Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical went to Hugh Jackman for his role in Les Miserables and Best Actress went to Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook, who won over Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Emily Blunt.
The Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture was awarded to Anne Hathaway in Les Miserable and Best Supporting Actor was given to Christoph Waltz for his role in Django Unchained (which also won Quentin Tarantino the award for Best Screenplay).
Homeland had a great night, winning the Globe for Best Television Series Drama and earning stars Damian Lewis and Claire Danes the Best Actor and Best Actress in a Television Series Drama award. Lena Dunham was also recognized for her work in Girls, earning the Globes for Best Series Comedy or Musical and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical (beating out hosts Fey and Poehler).
