Country Ham Sells for $1.6 Million at Auction

Food & Spirits: A 16-pound country ham went to auction and sold for a hefty $1.6 million at the annual Farm Bureau Country Ham Breakfast. The yearly auction is a part of the state fair held in Louisville, Ky. The record-setting amount raised the average price a country ham sold at this auction over the last 10 years to $462,048, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The winning bid was an impromptu joint effort put together on the day of the festivities by two local businessmen, Mr. Bernard Trager and Dr. Mark Lynn. It was reported that Trager sent a message to Lynn suggesting that they bid together to seal the deal. The pair shortly thereafter became mutual owners of the $1.6-million country ham.

Mr. Trager is a chairman of Republic Bank and Trust. Dr. Lynn of Dr. Lynn & Associates is the owner Dr. Bizer's Vision World. Broadbent B&B Foods of Kuttawa provided the 16-pound country ham. The Kentucky Farm Bureau has helped raise more than $5.6 million for local charities and educational and philanthropic groups over its 47-year history.

Let the squealing over the potential for next year's auction begin!
