Ready to revamp your look this fall? Look no further than the new luxury makeup collection from MAC Cosmetics, a tribute to one of the most iconic beauties in Hollywood history: Marilyn Monroe. Highlights of the line include deep red lipsticks, silver-hued shadows, lush faux lashes, dramatic liners and (our favorite!) a shimmery peach highlighting beauty powder. We sat down with MAC's director of makeup artistry, Gregory Arlt, for the full scoop!
JustLuxe: Tell us about the inspiration for the Marilyn collection and how it fits with the MAC brand. It's all so sexy!
Gregory Arlt: I wanted to create modern shades of red lipsticks for modern women, retro-loving women, and all women in general! The whole collection is a current take on Old Hollywood, modernizing the textures of the shadows by incorporating frosts and coming out with red lipsticks that we've never seen before. It's a collection that not only fits into MAC, but fits right into a woman's makeup kit!
JL: When we think of MAC, we think of all-out glamour. What are some easy tricks to make every woman feel glamorous on a daily basis?
GA:There are so many easy ways to instantly glamorize your look! Take red lipstick, for example. You can do your makeup in a very minimal, soft way and use red as an exclamation point to your look. Or swipe a fierce black cat eyeliner onto your upper lids. False lashes make a HUGE fashion statement, so don't be afraid to pop some on even in the daytime!
JL: What are your personal favorite products from the Marilyn collection? Give us some pointers when it comes to application.
GA: I love the lipsticks and wanted to create new reds for women that take their look to a modern, up-to-date level. We saw a ton of deep oxblood red lips on the runways and the red carpet this season, so "Deeply Adored" fits right into that trend. I'd pair it with a neutral eye so that the lipstick is the show piece. "Love Goddess" is a perfect fuchsia red. You can apply it with a lip brush for a sheer stain of color on the mouth, or right from the tube for an intense pop of color. Finally, the "Charmed, I'm Sure" tube is my take on a classic red, though there's a bit more of a berry tone to it. I say go for it when wearing this! Try it with "Cherry" lip liner. Fill your whole mouth in the pencil then apply the lipstick from the tube. Instant bombshell!
JL: How can this collection work for day AND night?
GA: It is so easy to bump these shades up to go from day to play! I recommend just applying more color for evening with a black liner like "Smolder" on the inner eye line, or really going for a red lip if you're not used to doing it!
JL: Marilyn was consistent with her beauty look thanks to her classic red lips, faux lashes and porcelain complexion. In your opinion, would you rather see today's woman with a signature beauty look like Marilyn's, or experiment with the season's trends, whatever they may be?
GA: I always say with makeup to do what you feel the most comfortable with. That said, don't be afraid to experiment! Go to your nearest MAC counter with images of makeup you've seen and liked and have them try them out on you. Remember- it washes off!
