Remember Mila Kunis strutting around in her perfectly-styled outfits as Jackie Burkhart on That ‘70s Show? Gucci’s collection is basically the equivalent for women of today as their runway was filled with patterns, silhouettes and textures straight out of the ‘70s. Plunging necklines, multicolored fur, and those iconic, high-waisted pants were modern replicas of all the chic designs our mothers probably wore at our age. It didn’t hurt that even accessories were given a vintage vibe with brown leather satchels, printed silk scarves tied at the neck and more woven belts than it seemed like they knew what to do with. While it’s not unfamiliar territory for designer Frida Giannini, the pieces in this collection were dead-on, expertly recalling decades gone by without it actually looking like any time had gone by.
Playing with varying lengths and proportions, the collection is an experiment in silhouettes, touching on the newest trends like culottes, which were done in a loose denim, or big, puffy fur jackets that left slender models looking like chic football players. At the same time dresses were almost unassuming, given the barest of structural bones while drawing their appeal from patterns, detailing, accessories or texturized accents. Lace-up detailing was also found on everything from frocks to shirts as well as buttons which gave pieces a military feel.
One of our favorite features of the collection was that Giannini kept materials in line with the vintage aesthetic. Jean, fur, leather and suede were used heavily on the runway and kept in line with the materials popular at the time. Some of our favorite pieces included an all-suede shirtdress, some of the denim culottes (we’re at least willing to try the trend) and every fur jacket that hit the catwalk.
For those that don’t know if they can pull off the ‘70s bohemian look, pairing one printed piece with your favorite boyfriend jeans or a fur jacket with black skinnies is an easy way to channel the decade without looking like you’ve been rummaging through your mother’s closet. On second thought, that’s not a terrible idea—she probably has some vintage Gucci in there.
