Once a year, celebrities, cosplayers, artists and fans get together to celebrate the very best of nerdom at San Diego Comic-Con. This weekend they took over the streets of San Diego and we found ourselves surrounded by handsome superheroes, colorful magical girls and brooding villains—it was pretty awesome.
Ultimate fans brought their obsessions to life through cosplay, where they dressed up to “play” as their favorite character for the day. At first glance it might seem like an activity reserved for the teenage Sailor Moon and Batman enthusiast, but we spoke with a few of these cosplayers and realized this hobby is no child’s play. Some of these dedicated fans spend months preparing, and thousands of dollars for just one look.
Those who create their own costumes usually have years of experience and will dedicate anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to craft an exact replicate of their favorite character’s outfit—from the giant sword carried by Cloud in Final Fantasy to the metal detailing on Thor’s armor. Those who purchase or commission their costumes are looking for the absolute best, most intricate piece they can find—and they’re willing to spend for authenticity if it makes them look like Loki for a day. (By the way we did see Loki, a.k.a. Tom Hiddleston there, but he was dressed in a dashing chambray suit.) Here are some of our favorite cosplay looks from the weekend.
