By now you’ve no doubt seen Rihanna’s custom-made, Swarovski-encrusted, Adam Selman dress, and whether you love it or hate it (we love it!), it’s pretty much all anyone is talking about. The singer/fashion icon accepted an award last night during the CFDA Awards where designers, models and celebrities came together to celebrate work in fashion. Rihanna, receiving the Fashion Icon Award, was joined in the winner’s circle by Tom Ford who accepted the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, Raf Simons who took home the International Award, and Ruth Finley of Fashion Calendar who received the 2014 Board of Director’s Tribute.
While everyone was clearly in a hubbub over the red-carpet fashion (let’s be honest, it was mostly just Rihanna’s dress), designers were anxious to see if they would win the coveted awards given by the CFDA. Joseph Altuzarra of Altuzarra won an award for Womenswear Designer of the Year while Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne designers for Public School accepted the Menswear Designer of the Year title. Actresses, designers and entrepreneurs Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen won Accessories Designer of the Year for their collection at The Row.
To celebrate up-and-coming talent, a class of Swarovski Awards honored several designers including Creatures of the Wind’s Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters for their work in women’s wear, designer Tim Coppens took home the award for his men’s wear, and Irene Neuwirth was honored for her accessory design.
