Riwayat and the Pakistani High Commission teamed up to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence by bringing the country’s best fashion and cultural heritage to a European audience. Lancaster House, a royal property overlooking Buckingham Palace, served as the prestigious backdrop for three runway shows and a buyer’s exhibition for Season 11 of Pakistan Fashion Week London.
The venue provided a fitting tribute for the anniversary celebrations since the Pakistani flag was sent from Lancaster House 70 years ago for the opening of Pakistan’s first Embassy in London. Now in its fifth year, the Pakistan Fashion Week London runway shows included 36 established and emerging designers who presented traditional, modest wear, jewelry, and fusion collections.
The models—recruited from the top ranks of Pakistan’s entertainment industry and as far afield as Brazil —dazzled equally in intricately embroidered bridal gowns and modern silhouettes designed with a global audience in mind. The elaborate catwalk shows ran through the ornate grand halls of Lancaster House, while a nine-room exhibition provided attendees an opportunity to meet the designers and directly purchase items from the collections on display at Pakistan Fashion Week London 11.
Led by the growing affluence of the diaspora, interest is growing in South Asian fashion week events throughout Europe. The South Asian fashion industry is estimated to be over $100 billion and fusion and modest wear collections are receiving more attention globally. For Pakistan, the fashion and textile industries are a leading source of export revenues.
The landmark celebration showcased unique designer collections by Safina Umair “Cheena” Chappra, who is better known as a designer for a cause for her work to promote awareness for social causes. Cheena Chappra specializes in designing elegant collections for the plus size market that utilize traditional Pakistani block prints. Chappra’s collection at Pakistan Fashion Week London 11 stood out for its use of traditional textiles and over the top peacock-themed accessories.
The catwalk shows would not be complete without bespoke jewelry inspired by the rich South Asian cultural traditions. KJ Jewelers presented a collection of antique and contemporary designs that would elevate any little back. The diamond and semi-precious pieces were inspired by Persian, Mughal, and Indian art. For Season 12, Riwayat is partnering with the Pakistani High Commission to the United Nations in Geneva for a catwalk show at the Intercontinental Geneva on September 16.
